Twenty years as an involved resident of Santa Clara have taught me quite a bit. From my tenure on organizations like the Santa Clara Sister Cities Association and Citizen’s Advisory Committee, to my attendance of City Council and Planning Commission meetings, to my staunch support of neighborhoods, I have gained an understanding of our City and its people. On the General Plan Steering Committee, I helped form the long-term vision for our City, only to see that plan distort as projects and council approvals destroyed the integrity of the underlying design.
Let’s restore vision, emphasizing planning over mere development, to create new communities with homes and families while preserving the nature of existing neighborhoods. Let’s give developers what they need to improve our City, but within our vision, and with mutual benefits. Let’s bring our City out of stasis by being more open and putting the people’s voice back into government. We should manage utility increases to help our fiscally-conscious populace, and increase utility of City resources like our Senior Center, libraries, and parks. Let’s return focus on infrastructure, including streets, sewers, and open space, so that future generations of Santa Clarans will have room to grow and reasons to stay.
